L/Sgt. Robert Victor Virgo

L/Sgt. Robert Victor Virgo, formerly of the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment, served with the Intelligence Section of HQ Troop of No.6 Commando.

L/Sgt. Robert Virgo was Killed In Action (KIA) aged 23 years, during an artillery barrage on Commando positions near the River Aller on 11th April 1945. He had been serving as the Commando Intelligence Sergeant at the time.

Robert was the son of Robert Henry and Cecilia Virgo, of Brighton, Sussex. Robert was laid to rest in Celle War Cemetery (Celle, Niederschsen, Germany) Grave 3.F.3.

The inscription on the headstone reads ‘Here Lies a Loved Son.  A Brave Soldier.’

Whilst the headstone notes him as a Lance-Corporal, he is noted both on the Commando ‘Roll Call of Honour’ and within Brig. Derek Mills-Roberts memoirs as a Lance-Sergeant.
